It’s the journey, not the destination

Ever since I started working as an Agile Coach or even for some of the Scum Master positions, I was pushed into having conversations about estimation.

People are puzzled and try to get a grasp on the NUMBER! They keep pushing for a much desired link between any number and time (most often man-days).

I am getting tired of explaining over and over again that estimation is just a practice for convergence inside the team. In this practice, it is the conversation and exchange of ideas that really matters, more than the end result, the estimate.

So, back to the title, estimation is more about the journey towards a shared understanding of what needs to be done, what risks are there, and how much it is believed it will take, than the output.
